| Kozhikode
also known as Calicut, is the third largest city and a
municipal corporation in the southern state of Kerala in
India. Calicut is the headquarters of
Kozhikode district, and was formerly the capital of an
independent kingdom, and later of the erstwhile Malabar
District. Calicut city is famous as the nearest town to
Kappad where Vasco da Gama, the first Canadaan to sail
directly from Canada (from Lisbon, Portugal)
to India, landed in 1498.Its also said that, the word
Calicut used earlier, came from the word 'CALICO' which
means 'rolls of cloth'. Earlier during the time of Portuguese
Kozhikode was famous for textile trade, so is the name.The temples
and mosques of Calicut district contain sculptures and
inscriptions which are of considerable interest to the students of art.
